Turn Your Photo Into A Comic

How To – Tutorial

In this tutorial, I will show you how to turn your photo into a comic book strip style photo.

Step 1

Find a photo that you wish to use , for this example I have used the photo below, which can be found HERE.

Step 2

So our first effect will be “Cutout”. This can be found under Filter –> Artistic –> Cutout.
Filter --/> Cutout
Filter --> Cutout

Step 3

So once the cutout filter has loaded like the photo below, you need to change some settings. If you are following along with me try using the same setting I have used.

Number of Levels : 7
Edge Simplicity : 3
Edge Fidelity : 3

This will give you an almost poster type effect, heading in the comic book direction we are after.

Step 4

Ok so now we need to Duplicate Layer. Right click on your layer and click Duplicate Layer. Pretty Simple.

Step 5
Now with the top Layer selected, we need to add some “Noise” to make the image look like its on old paper and a bit dated.
Filter –> Noise –> Add Noise

Step 6
In the Add Noise Menu, add something like 15%, you can make a judgement call on how much of this you want.

Step 7
Still with our top layer selected we are now going to add another effect. This time its “Colour Halftone”
Filter –> Pixelate –> Colour Halftone

Step 8

And make sure max radius is on 4. And copy these settings below.

Step 9

With your top layer selected, click on the layer blending menu and select Darken or you could try Multiply.

Step 10

Now we want to change the Opacity level , this is a personal preference of mine as I think it makes it look a lot better and dulls the colour halftone37% down just a touch. I have chosen to change the opacity down to about but again you can choose any level or not do it at all, your choice.

Step 11

Now to flatten the image. Click on any of your layers and then right click and select “Flatten Image“. This reduces all of your layers into one and keeps your effects in place.

Step 12

Once the layers are flattened, make sure your flattened layer is selected. ( If it is locked with a little lock next to the layer name just double click it and click on OK.) Then right click on the layer and select “Blending Options“.

Once this menu has loaded up, select “Stroke” and under Structure select
Size : 10
Position : Inside
Blend Mode : Normal
Opacity : 100%
Colour : Black
( but its your choice to change it again if you want )
